Points for Grumpy
Purpose
Appropriate
for verbally defiant and non-compliant students, this technique is a form of a
response-cost strategy. Using this
technique continually reminds the student of a goal and expectation of behavior
to be accomplished throughout the day.
Ø
Gather two coffee cans with lids
and cut a slit in the lids.
Ø
Decorate one can with grumpy and
frowning faces or other “not so happy” symbols.
Ø
Decorate
the other can by allowing the student to draw, color, and paste pictures of
things he or she likes, as well as placing his or her name somewhere on the
outside of the can.
Ø
Explain
to the student(s) that he or she can earn points for being compliant to the
requests made throughout the day.
Ø
If
the student is being noncompliant, drop one coin or token into the “Grumpy”
can. Continue this process
throughout the period or day.
Ø
When
a student is observed demonstrating appropriate behavior or being compliant,
drop a coin or token into “Their” can.
Ø
At
the end of the day or period, compare cans by subtracting student’s coins or
tokens from the total number in the “Grumpy” can.
The remaining number of coins or tokens may be counted as points and
added to existing points for the day or week.
Ø
After
student reaches the required number of points needed, he/she should receive
predetermined reward or choice of reward.
This
strategy can be used with an individual student or with an entire class. The
class could earn coins in a “class can” for overall appropriate behavior
(working quietly, appropriate transitions, etc.) or coins could be deposited in
the “Grumpy can” when inappropriate behaviors are displayed. Peer pressure
will help encourage more appropriate behaviors from individuals that cause the
class to lose coins.
