Talk Ticket

Purpose

Often times, teachers do not have the time to sit down one-on-one with a student.  This “talk ticket” ensures that a student will have a scheduled time to have personalized attention from the teacher.  The student will be allowed to address any issues he/she has encountered or feels necessary to bring to the teacher’s attention.

Implementation

v    Create “talk ticket” that includes a scheduled date and time for the meeting.

v    Meet with the students, individually, to explain the purpose and procedure of using the “talk ticket”.

v    Be sure to offer the student alternatives, such as meeting with a school counselor, administrator, or other teacher.

v     It is important to honor the time and date that is scheduled on the “talk   ticket”.

Modifications

When using this technique with a student who needs to discuss upsetting issues, one might consider using other techniques in accompany with the “talk ticket”.  For instance, a teacher might use reflective writing or drawing to allow the student to more clearly express his or her emotions.  This, in turn will provide a clearer illustration of the upsetting event the student is talking about.
