Transfer Contest

 

Purpose

            The “Transfer Contest” motivates students to generalize their new social-emotional skill outside of the classroom.

 

Methods

VERSION I (NOT AS RELIABLE)

·        Have the student write down each time he or she uses their new skill outside of the classroom, such as at home or around other peers.

·        Have the student keep a record and report this usage to the teacher.

 

VERSION II (MORE RELIABLE)

·        Have pre-printed “social-emotional coupons” and distribute to parents and teachers.

·        Whenever they observed the student(s) using the skill a coupon will be given to the student.

·        The student(s) will turn in their coupons to selected teacher.

·        The student(s) with the most coupons will be given a pre-specified reward.

 

Modifications

            This technique can be modified for group contests as well as individual goal setting.
