What Would You Do?

 Purpose

The “What Would You Do” technique or game is used to build social skills for individual students and within the class as a whole.  Given situations or predicaments, students have the opportunity to respond individually or as a small group, building awareness of possible situations that could occur (or previously occurred) and building a list of ways to respond and ways not to respond to these situations.  Also, this technique targets those who tend to be more reserved and seldom participate in class.

Procedure/Method

·        Students, either individually or in small groups, are given a “What Would You Do” card that has a picture and an explanation of a situation that needs to be addressed.

·        The student or group will take a few minutes and brainstorm possible ways they would/should respond.

·        After the allotted time, the student or group spokesperson will be asked to share the given situation and responses.

·        The class as a whole will then be asked to respond, adding other possible solutions.

·        Each student or group will have a turn to share his or her situation and responses.

Modifications

Students who need assistance in reading the card or in writing responses may have a peer read the card and/or write their responses.  Groups may be given several situations, whereas individual students may be responsible for addressing one situation.  This gives each student a chance to gain speaking experience and is an easy way to include all students instead of the usual students who have no fear of speaking out.
