Wild Cards

Procedures:

In this strategy, children are given a “wild card” when the teacher observes appropriate/exceptional behaviors. Wild cards can be used as an extra bonus for a child that is doing exceptionally well behaviorally during a given assignment, activity, class period or throughout the day. Rewards can be written on the back of each card and the child can draw from a “reward deck” and collect the reward. Wild cards can be earned throughout the day/week and then exchanged for a special reward.  A wild card can also represent an immediate delivery of a reward such as a break from task, free time, group line leader, etc.

Wild cards can also be incorporated into other class management strategies.

Who can benefit:

This strategy can be used with an entire classroom or with a single child. Especially good for children that need lots of incentive and reinforcement.

Modifications:

The fun thing about this strategy is that it can be very spontaneous on the teacher’s part or it can be very systematic. There are a variety of ways in which wild cards can be incorporated into the classroom. This strategy works well for an entire classroom, small groups, or individual, as a behavior management program or as part of a larger program.
