Word Boards
The purpose of a word board is to provide visual illustrations/reminders
for the student/class that accompany a theme or words that may be the focus of
the week.
·
Establish a word list,
theme, or focus for the week, month, or six-week period.
·
For each word, category,
or theme, use a bulletin board or poster board to create illustrations
(drawings, magazine pictures, etc.).
·
If using words, for each
word select pictures or other illustrations that use the word in different
settings or contexts. For example, if the theme was food, one could categorize
food into the four main groups (a poster for each group) and use various
illustrations.
·
If
using a theme, several posters could be placed around the room.
For instance, if using the theme “hero”, one could make/cut out
illustrations regarding heroic situations, or people in a student’s life that
they view as a hero, and so on.
·
Change
themes when appropriate.
Modifications can be made to accommodate individual needs. For instance, a particular board or section of the room could be used to meet the needs of one individual or a small group of individuals that may have difficulty in one learning/social skill area.
